Since this is a turbocharged engine, heat and volume were the main considerations during development. This intake system has been developed to offer the highest possible flow rate whilst maintaining the lowest intake temperatures possible. Each component has been designed to provide the turbo with a smooth and free flowing path. By ensuring a sealed system we have improved on the IAT’s of the OEM airbox whilst at the same time increasing the internal volume to reduce the pressure drop and therefore reduce pumping losses of the turbo. In doing so the turbo is able to operate more efficiently and therefore reaches peak boost sooner to produce a net performance gain.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe filter itself has an outer diameter of 210mm or 8.3″ with a filtration surface area of over 130,000mm^2. Heat and Volume are the main considerations when designing an intake for turbocharged engines. In the Supra, the intake system is located next to the exhaust manifold which rapidly heat soaks the engine bay. High temperatures are detrimental for engine performance as the turbo would have to build boost with heated, less dense air and so the only way to ensure IAT’s are kept to a minimum is for a fully sealed intake. This however, results in a restriction with only one stock air feed to draw air in from.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan\u003eDuring development we noticed an additional opening into the wheel arch area and took advantage of this by adding a secondary feed to our airbox. Furthermore our sealed airbox also has a heat shield with gold reflective to minimize the radiative heat transfer from the exhaust manifold. In order to maximize volume we made the airbox as large as possible with a recess for potential strut braces. \u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan\u003eThe stock convoluted intake tube is replaced with a smooth carbon tube which is also larger in internal volume with a starting internal diameter of 111mm (4.4″) smoothly tapering down to match the turbo inlet. The tube provides a smooth path from the filter to the turbo inlet. We tested both stock and tuned cars to assess the impact of changing the intake for a less restrictive version. The NA 2.4L Boxer engine is sensitive to intake air temperatures so our initial priority was to ensure a fully sealed system.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eDyno testing revealed a dip in power around 6000rpm on the stock ECU. This dip persists no matter what the intake configuration is – even with all possible restrictions removed, a higher flowing intake creates a strong engine resonance at this rpm causing a momentary dip below the stock curve. The stock airbox has a baffling effect at this rpm but then also restricts the power at the top end. By iterating our design through testing different intake lengths, single and dual duct openings and even adding baffles, we arrived at a version which minimizes the resonance dip while gaining 14hp at the top end on the stock ECU. Once the ECU is tuned we can see large mid-range gains and an elimination of the dip in power below the stock curve.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003chr class=\"mx-auto w-100\"\u003e\n\u003ch4\u003eThe Eventuri Difference\u003c\/h4\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe GR86 Eventuri system uses our Patented Carbon fiber Housing which provides an aerodynamically efficient airflow path from the filter to the turbo. The carbon pod shrouds the reverse mounted filter and smoothly shapes the airflow down to the MAF section which then connects to the rear inlet tube. This changes the flow path from the OEM airbox where airflow enters the front of the airbox, changes direction by 90 degrees to travel through the panel filter and then changes direction again by 90 degrees to move through the MAF section. Our system is a lot more direct with airflow entering the front of the filter housing and and moving into the MAF section without any abrupt direction changes. The result is a smoother path from the filter to the turbo inlet tube and therefore the turbo is able to function with less drag. To ensure a reliable seal with the MAF sensor, we use a CNC machined mount secured to the carbon housing.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe duct feeds the filter housing with ambient airflow from the front bumper\/grill section. Through testing several iterations we found that a dual intake where cold air was taken from both openings in the slam panel area, functioned in the least restrictive manner. The region in the front bumper area is saturated with cold air from our scoops and also from the natural design of the OEM cavity behind the bumper. The duct has an expanding rubber seal which mates to the filter housing to ensure heated engine bay air is kept away from the intake feed, but still allows for engine movement.
